Ghana came within one penalty kick of becoming the first African side to reach a World Cup semi-final. In the last seconds of a compelling match, Luis Suarez handled on the line and was sent off, allowing Asamoah Gyan to take Ghana through with what surely would have been the last kick of the game. He struck the post and Ghana missed twice in the shoot-out that followed. In front of passionate support at Soccer City,  they had taken the lead through a 35-yard drive from Sully Muntari that completely wrong-footed the keeper. Diego Forlan equalised and then came the dismissal of Suarez, the missed penalty and the shoot-out. John Mensah and Dominic Adiyiah took dreadful spot-kicks and Sebastian Abreu’s cheeky chip took Uruguay to their first semi-final in 40 years. However, they will be without their best striker and they are likely to be pretty tired. Advantage Holland.
